Sharon Kiptoo is from the Ogiek community, which is the minority ethnic group in this region of Kenya. The Ogiek are hunters and gatherers who have lived in the forest for centuries. Unfortunately, the government evicted the Ogiek from the forest. More information on the removal of the Ogiek from their lands.
When Sharon's family was evicted from their ancestral lands, Sharon and her family were left homeless.
Sharon writes in her letter to the Harambee Foundation, "I have come to learn of your kindness and humanity. I today kindly request you to extend your sincere help to considering me. I promise faithfulness and hard work upon my success in life. I will not forget to assist the brothers and sisters at the children's home and also back in the community."
Sharon earned a B on her standardized exams despite growing up homeless.
